Anthony Joseph Contrabasso was born in Fort Belvoir Army Hospital, Virginia. Everyone called him A.J. He was raised in Staten Island, NY, and moved to Sayreville, NJ, at the age of 14. At the age of 35, he moved to Asheboro, North Carolina. He passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026.


Born on March 18, 1989, he was the son of Michele Gregory and Jonathan Contrabasso. He worked in construction in New York City most of his life. In 2024, he worked as an auto mechanic for Southend Service Center in Asheboro, NC, with his Uncle Tony. A.J. loved working with his hands and was extremely talented and did an amazing job in both careers.


He loved dogs, especially Bailey, Kiwi, and Buddy, and adored his family, especially his five brothers. He was known for his sense of humor, and he was a very kindhearted person.


He is survived by his mom, Michele, stepdad, Kearon, and two brothers, Kearon and Ryan, in New Jersey; his father, Jonathan, and his stepmother, Teresa; and his brothers, Jacob, Dylin, and Zachary, who reside in Arizona. A.J. also has his Grandparents in Florida, Joseph and Cynthia, Kearon and Sherry in New York, and Anthony and Sheila in Arizona. A.J. had many aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him very much.


At the family’s request, A.J. will be cremated and sent home to his family in New Jersey. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, July 17, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 531 Washington Avenue, South Amboy, NJ 08879. Arrangements are under the direction of The Gundrum Service "Home For Funerals" 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the family.
