Carole Joy Kurtz Sumski, 88, of Monroe Township died on Wednesday October 22, 2025 at home. Beloved daughter of the late Assemblyman Andrew and Florence Ward Kurtz. Born in South Amboy on December 23, 1936, Joy attended schools in South Amboy, graduating from Harold G. Hoffman High School in 1954. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School. She worked as a teller at the South Amboy Trust Company. In 1958 she married the love of her life, Stan. They built a home in Sayreville and raised their four children. In 1989, after Stan’s retirement they moved to Ocean View in Cape May County. After Stan’s early death in 1990, Joy became very involved in Sea Isle City, where she was president of both the Garden Club and the Women’s Leisure Club, and vice president of AARP #710. She leaves many dear friends in Sea Isle.
Devoted and loving mother of Stanley Sumski and his wife Sue, David Sumski, Kenneth Sumski and Margaret Ellen DiMauro and her husband Vince; grandmother of Alan, Julie, David and Alexandria Sumski and Vincent, III (and his wife Shelly) and Lauren DiMauro and great-grandmother to Carson and James DiMauro. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She is predeceased by her sister Esther “Sis” Buickerood and her brother Manville “Max” Kurtz.
Funeral services will be held on Monday October 27, 2025 at 6:30pm during visiting from 3 to 7pm at The Gundrum Service “Home For Funerals” 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy. Cremation and burial in Cape May County Veterans Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to USO.org and select “dedicate this donation”, then enter “Joy Sumski for Coast Guard Tuesday”.
