Eugene O'Toole Obituary

Eugene L. O’Toole, 92, of Sayreville passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 3, 2022. Born and raised in South Amboy he moved to Sayreville in 1962.

Gene was a Korean War veteran and was very proud to serve his country. He was a true American who loved God, his family, and his country. Gene was a devoted family man and friend to all who were blessed to know him. He was a faithful NY Yankees and NY Giants fan. He was an avid reader of the morning paper, sports magazines, and always awaited the new issue of the SA Times. When you were in Gene’s company you enjoyed the conversation, his laughter, and he always offered you many compliments. You always walked away feeling better after you saw Gene because he had the ability to bring out the best in people. His late friend often said “He was a gentleman’s gentleman.” Gene had the kindest heart and spoke the softest words to everyone he encountered through his life.

Gene was very active in St. Mary Church, South Amboy, as a former Eucharistic minister and also as one of the trustees of the parish. Throughout the years, Gene also served on many committees in the parish. Also, Gene was a former member of the Sayreville/South Amboy Rotary Club.

Gene graduated from St. Mary High School and while working at Western Electric for ten years he became co-owner with Allie Clark of the Sportsman Inn (formerly The Landmark) on Broadway in South Amboy, NJ. Gene joined Syntex/Roach pharmaceuticals as their Distribution Manager for 28 years until his retirement in 2004.

Son of the late William J. and Ethel B. he was predeceased by his brothers William and John and his sisters Ann Maniscalco and Majorie David. He was also predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Rita (Wieczorkowski) in 2002 and his son, Rev. Eugene (Chip) O’Toole in 1996.  He is survived by his two devoted friends Rev. Dennis Weezorak of South Amboy and Susan Chesakis of Old Bridge. Gene is also survived by his goddaughter Meghan (McKenna) Winston of Middletown, cousins Kenneth Henderson of Port Richey, FL and Mary Beth Henderson of Dobbs Ferry, NY, a niece Colleen (O’Toole) Fobes and a nephew John O’Toole of Florida and a host of friends. A special thank you to his doctor and long-time close friend, Dr. Harold McKenna. Also, to his devoted neighbor Erik Antone and his caregiver, Mariya.
