Henry M. Conroy, 83, died on Sunday, June 1, at the Atlantic Rehabilitation Center in Lakewood, NJ . A true “son of South Amboy”, he grew up playing both basketball and baseball for St. Mary’s High School. After graduating, he earned degrees from both Belmont Abbey College and Kean University. An Army Veteran who served as a Drill Sergeant in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he moved his family to Brick, NJ in 1973. Before retiring from the Woodbridge School District, he worked for 36 years as a respected and admired English teacher and basketball coach.
Since 1981, Henry has been a successful and accomplished DJ and entertainer in both NJ and NYC. Until 2024, he was a featured DJ at Raise the Bar (formerly The Landmark Tavern) in South Amboy. He will be remembered as a man who lived for music and loved bringing people together. Later in his DJ career, he contributed articles as “The Ghost” to the South Amboy Times. His articles were a collection of memories of growing up and performing in and around the South Amboy area. Though music was his passion, it was Henry’s warmth, humor, and generous spirit that truly defined him.
Son of the late Henry and Joan Dooling Conroy, he is also predeceased by his brothers Edward and John Conroy. He is survived by his wife Eileen Norek Conroy; his daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Peter Farnsworth of Brick; his godson John Conroy of Los Angeles; his sister and brother-in-law Blanche and William Savage of Virginia; his sister-in-law Cathy Conroy of Whiting; his sister-in-law Suzanne Conroy of Morgan; the Norek family and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, friends, and fans.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday June 4, 2025 from 3 to 6pm at The Gundrum Service "Home For Funerals" 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy with a service at 5:30. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Mary's Church, 256 Augusta Street, South Amboy, NJ 08879.
