James Ernest “Jim” Callanan, of South Amboy passed away on May 19, 2021 at the age of 73. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy. Born in Irvington, New Jersey, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, stationed in Germany.
He worked for over thirty-five years in the Financial District in New York City. On September 11th, 2001 his courage and compassion was evident when he helped a group of individuals as they struggled to walk to safety. He spent his happiest times with his friends and family, especially his girlfriend Rose and his granddaughter Scarlett. He loved watching a ballgame on TV, spending a day at the racetrack and trips to Las Vegas. He had a sweet, easygoing disposition with a quick-witted sense of humor.
Jim’s path in life, through his personal experiences, led him to be the beacon for people to find their own strength and comfort raising a child with special needs.
Son of the late John and Rose McCarney Callanan he is survived by his daughters Mary H. Reilly and Marjorie R. Callanan; his son-in-law Thomas Reilly; his granddaughter Scarlett R. Reilly; his girlfriend Rose Lombardi and his siblings Elizabeth McCarthy, Noreen Dalton and her husband Jerome and John Callanan and his wife Marianne.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday May 25, 2021 at 7:30pm at The Gundrum Service “Home For Funerals” 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy. Cremation was private. Memorial visitation will be on Tuesday from 6 to 8pm.
