James Aloysius Murphy, M.D., 81, of Ocean City, N.J., passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 surrounded by his devoted wife, Jackie, and their loving family. He courageously fought cancer several times. He faced every obstacle with optimism and hope. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the eldest of 5 Murphy brothers born to Dr. Malcolm J. and Margaret M. Kelly Murphy of Broad Street in the Logan Section. He was a devout catholic throughout his lifetime. A graduate of LaSalle University and the Hahnemann School of Medicine, he interned at Lancaster General Hospital. He also served in the U.S. Navy as the ship’s physician on the USS Fulton in Groton, Ct. and as an Emergency Room Physician at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. Jim did his Radiology Residency at Philadelphia General Hospital. In addition to being a brilliant Radiologist, he could fix anything! He enjoyed working with his hands and while being treated for cancer, was installing new bathroom cabinets. Nothing could keep him down! He and Jackie travelled all over the world. Disney World and Bermuda were favorite destinations of theirs. The beach, boardwalk, biking, boating, especially sailing, were favorite activities of his. Reading was a life long passion. He could always be found with a book or Kindle in his hand. He continually kept learning throughout his lifetime. Jim never really retired. He worked in Florida as a Radiologist as recent as April doing locums work. He always woke up before anyone in Ocean City and was ready for a bike ride or making breakfast for everyone in the house. He made the best pancakes and ice cream sodas! He was known in our family as the “Energizer Bunny” every day, and was a loving husband and dedicated father and Poppop.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 58 years, Jacqueline “Jackie” Cahill Murphy; his children James A. Murphy, Jr., Christopher Murphy and his wife Mary Beth, Jeanine Sharkey-Kudish and her husband Gary, Dr. Colleen Buffington, and her husband Hank, and Kevin Murphy and his wife Suzanne. Jim and Jackie have 12 beautiful grandchildren Sean, Brigid, Owen, and Liam Murphy, Katie and Megan Sharkey, James, Fiona, Colin, Henry and Blake Buffington and Jack Murphy. Finally, Jim loved all his dogs and Lucy brought him joy everyday.
