Jose A. Montanez

Jose Amado Montanez, 84, of South Amboy died on Friday May 31, 2024 at home. Born in Puerto Rico he lived in the Bronx, moved to New Jersey in 1976, retired to Puerto Rico, and eventually moved back to New Jersey. Before retiring he was employed as a Corrections Officer at the Rahway State Prison and was a member of the Special Operations Group. He was a U.S. Navy SEAL, enjoyed boxing, and previously worked for General Motors in New York. He enjoyed playing baseball wherever he lived, and was once a Triple A player for the New York Yankees.

Son of the late Juan and Leonarda Cruz Montanez he is also predeceased by his wife Raquel Negroni Montanez in 2021. He is survived by his children Brenda Powell and her husband Russell J., Jr., Raquel Aponte and her husband Gerry, Javier Montanez and his wife Shelly R. and Wanda Montanez; his grandchildren Luis A. Montanez, Diamond St. J. Melendez, Gerry J. Aponte, Amanda R. Luisi, Marissa Abetamarco and her husband Alberto and David Moriarty and his wife Jessica and his great-grandchildren Jacob Montanez, Joshua Montanez, Mia Z. Montanez, Elias A. Montanez, Jesse Luisi, Evangeline A. Abetamarco and Alistair Jett Abetamarco.

Funeral services will be held on Monday June 3, 2024 at 5:30pm at The Gundrum Service “Home For Funerals” 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy. Cremation will be private. Visitation will be on Monday from 3 to 6pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
