Obituary

Joseph Peter “Poppa Joe” Spencer, 84, of Columbus died on Wednesday July 26, 2023 at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Camden. Born in South Amboy he grew up in Morgan and was employed by the Milltown School System until retiring. An avid fan of the New York Mets he enjoyed gardening, crabbing and grocery shopping. He loved calling his children and grandchildren everyday no matter what. He was a Master Mason at Mt. Moriah Lodge #28, was an Eagle Scout, served as Scout Master and was involved with the food pantry at First Presbyterian Church.

Son of the late Joseph and Mary Stafranski Spencer he is also predeceased by his brothers Arthur, John and James Spencer and his sister Mary Spencer Pollack. He is survived by his wife Lois Dill Spencer; his children Denise Spencer and Tom Edgington of Columbus, Colleen Spencer Roberts and her husband Brandon of South Amboy, Maureen Spencer Bizien and her husband Frank of South Amboy, Joanne Spencer Noble and her husband Robert of South Amboy and Joseph Spencer, III and his wife Kylie of Tomball, Texas; his siblings Robert Spencer of Georgia and Patricia Spencer Klosek and her husband John of Parlin; his grandchildren Gregory and his wife Samantha, Nicholas and his wife Juliann, Theresa, Alex, Brandon, Jr., Ryan, Jakki, McKenna, Paul, Kayla Emma, Beth Anne, Rory and Leila; his great-grandchildren Orion, Lyla, Stefan, Justin, Jada, Amira, Chase, Liam and Lexii; his brothers-in-law Edwin Dill and George Quirk; his sisters-in-law Dorothy Dill and Roz Dill; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and his best friend George Schaefer of South Amboy.

Funeral services will be held on Monday July 31, 2023 at 7pm at The Gundrum Service “Home For Funerals” 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy. Cremation will be private. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 7pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Wounded Warrior Project.
