Lillian Dorothy (Dotty) Gallagher passed away peacefully January 4, 2026, at Sunrise of East Brunswick Assisted Living and Memory Care, where she has resided the past four years.
Dotty was born September 8, 1933, in New York City, NY, the only child of Ellen and Phillip Lynch. As an infant, she moved to Dublin, Ireland. At the age of 18, Dotty immigrated back to the United States, living with her Aunt and Uncle, Alice and Tom Brennan in Riverdale, NY.
While living in New York, Dotty met the love of her life, William (Bill) Gallagher. They married at St. Margaret of Cortona in the Bronx on June 8, 1957 and moved to Brooklyn, NY. In 1959 they moved to Parlin, NJ where they raised their three children, Gail, Kenneth (Ken) and Brendan. Dotty and Bill loved traveling to Ireland and Scotland, going on international St. Bernadette’s church trips, taking annual beach vacations, going on many cruises, dancing (especially Irish dancing), attending Freehold Races (both for the horse races and the Irish celebrations), gardening and ‘working’ Bingo. They were married for 49 wonderful years until Bill’s passing in November 2006. Dotty was employed by Gibbs & Cox, Inc., in New York City in a clerical role for many years, returning to work once her children were grown, and until her retirement. Sadly, Dotty was preceded in death by her son, Ken Gallagher in November 2024.
Apart from family, her great passions in life were her Catholic faith, volunteering, traveling, sewing, knitting and quilting.
Dotty was a parishioner of St. Bernadette Church for well over 60 years. She worked Tuesday Bingo with Bill and many close friends for more than 50 years. Her responsibilities ranged from selling Bingo cards, calling Bingo and working in the kitchen to managing the financial accounting books. Dotty was a member of the Columbiette Council #8478, supporting many charities and involvement in community activities. She made and donated infant bibs for babies’ christenings at the church. In addition, Dotty was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, an organization which strives to embrace the principle of faith working through love in the promotion of justice, equality, and the advancement of human rights and human dignity for all. Finally, Dotty took tremendous pride in being a lifelong Pioneer – referencing the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association of the Sacred Heart, an international organization for Catholic teetotalers (abstaining from alcohol) based in Ireland.
Many believed Dotty was born with a needle in her hand. She spent countless years sewing – everything from making draperies, valances and bedspreads for homes, drapes for commercial businesses (just ask us about ‘fan-folding’), to bridal gowns, bridesmaid and flower girl dresses and coordinating family ensembles. With her reputation as an expert seamstress, she spent hours lengthening, shortening, patching, and repairing everything and anything. And, when she wasn’t sewing, she was knitting sweaters, scarves, and hats – even Christmas ornaments!
Dotty was a member of Rebecca’s Reel Quilters of Middletown and an avid quilter, making innumerous quilts, runners and wall hangings for family, friends, and fundraisers as well as baby quilts which were regularly donated to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital of New Brunswick.
Dotty is survived by her daughter Gail Hale and husband Ron of Damascus, MD, son Brendan Gallagher and his wife Heejung of Somerset, NJ and daughter-in-law Jane Gallagher of Jamaica Estates, NY. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Max Gallagher, Emily Hale, Caitlin Hale and Ethan Gallagher, who loved her and will miss their Grandma.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 10, 2026 at 8:45am from The Gundrum Service “Home For Funerals” 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy followed by a 9:30am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bernadette Church, Parlin. Interment will be in Holy Cross Burial Park, Jamesburg. Visitation will be on Friday from 3 to 7pm.
