Michael Riley Obituary

Michael Edward Riley, 65, of South Amboy, N.J., a former writer for the Asbury Park Press and the Home News Tribune, shuffled off this mortal coil surrounded by family on Monday, December 4, 2023. Throughout his life, he convinced an always-growing number of people that he was an “unbridled delight.”

He was born in Camden, N.J. to Judy Chute and Robert Holohan. Mike enjoyed pointing out the fact that having been adopted by his maternal grandmother, Florence Riley, and her second husband, Charles Riley, made him his own uncle.

An accomplished storyteller, Mike authored the weekly column, “Only Human,” which wove together themes of family, religion, and humor. The column ran in multiple publications, including the Asbury Park Press and the Home News Tribune, from 1990 until his retirement in 2015 and was featured in his published book of the same title. Mike, a lifelong Bruce Springsteen fan, experienced a career and life highlight when Mr. Springsteen informed him that he had read Only Human “for years” and found it “smart” and “funny.” This also gave Mike a story to tell and a picture to show anyone and everyone he met.

Mike was an ordained Baptist Minister. A long-time pastor of Stelton Baptist Church in Edison, N.J., Mike also served congregations in Atlantic Highlands, N.J.; Medford, M.A.; and Paulsboro, N.J. Through his unorthodox approach to ministry, Mike challenged his congregations to think beyond conventional understanding and to find deeper meaning in Christian teachings.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Jean Riley, 66, of South Amboy, who was properly warned the day she met Mike that he would be “holding court” in a student lounge of their alma mater, Eastern College, Saint Davids, P.A. He is also survived by four sons, who entered this world without such advance warning: Joshua, 41; Christopher, 39; Alexander, 35; and Samuel Riley, 27. The family—as well as his friends, colleagues, and congregants—were very lucky to have been members of the court as Mike, center-stage, bestowed his audience with the gifts of laughter, love, and a depth of thought. He will be missed.

Come one, come all! And, hold on to your hats! Mike asked that we put the 'fun' in funeral on Saturday, December 16, 4:30 PM, at First Presbyterian Church of Matawan. Family, friends, the community, and fans are invited to attend a memorial service to celebrate Mike's life. Per his request, anyone who wishes to share what Mike meant to them will have the opportunity to speak during the service.
