Patrick J. Kelly

Patrick J. Kelly, 91, of South Amboy died on Tuesday February 21, 2023, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Cork City, Ireland he immigrated to the United States in 1955 and lived in South Amboy for over 57 years. Before retiring he was employed as a Locomotive Engineer with Amtrak, Penn Station. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, South Amboy.

Son of the late Joseph and Mary O’Mahony Kelly he is also predeceased by his brother Denis Kelly; his sisters Rita Rapp and Margaret Tant and her husband George; his son-in-law Tom Perry and his nephew Matthew Moore. He is survived by his wife Rose Bracken Kelly; his children Dr. Maria Kelly; Brendan Kelly and his wife Ann and their sons Thomas and Daniel; Dr. Kevin Kelly and his wife Erin and their sons Ian and Jake; Sharon Perry and her children Christian, Sean and Catherine; Dr. Michael Kelly and his daughters Elizabeth and Grace; Dr. Patrick Kelly and his wife Melissa and their sons Liam and Aidan and Deirdre Kelly and her daughter Kiera and  his sister Patricia “Bernie” Kelly, and extended family members in Ireland and around the globe.

Pat (Sonny) was a wonderful husband and father. With his wife Rose they raised 7 children and now have 12 grandchildren. They came to America for a better way of life for their family and made many sacrifices to achieve this. He was a man of integrity, honesty, and generosity. He never spoke ill of others or used foul language. He encouraged his children and then grandchildren to believe there was nothing they could not achieve if they wanted it and worked for it. He loved his wife Rose for over 66 years, truly a match made in heaven. Both were committed to family, loved dancing and travel, and had a sense of humor that never waned no matter the situation. He will be missed very much but we are grateful to God for 91 wonderful years.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday February 28, 2023, at 8:45am from The Gundrum Service “Home for Funerals” 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy followed by a 9:30am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church. Interment will be in the Cemetery of the Resurrection, Staten Island. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 8pm. At Mr. Kelly’s request, flowers are not desired; instead, please make donations to Doctors Without Borders, Turkey Earthquake Relief or Catholic Relief Services.
