Peter Dunne, 89, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday September 6, 2025 at home. Born in Dublin, Ireland he lived in Edison and South Amboy before moving to Scotch Plains. A veteran of the U.S. Army he was a hardworking bar owner of Ireland Eyes in Brooklyn. He was a skilled horse racing follower/bettor, an avid golfer, corny joke teller, poet, and singer of Irish tunes. He was known to break out Tura Lura Lura on many occasions. A member of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, South Amboy he was devoted to his faith and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Peter was a loving caretaker, willing “play patient” and tea party participant with his step-grandchildren, conservative poker player, devoted McDonald’s pancake eater and loved cooking corned beef and Irish stew for family and friends. His favorite holiday was St. Patrick’s Day. He loved watching the Jets and Mets!
Son of the late Christopher and Catherine Dunne he is also predeceased by his wife Mary Philomena Dunne in 2005, three brothers; two sisters and his beloved dog April. He is survived by his wife Regina Zygmontowicz Stephanick; his sister Matilda Masciulla; his niece Karen Masciulla; his friends Father John Shevlin and Merv and Lionel Miranda; his stepchildren Maryann Villegas and her husband Butch, Dana Applegate and her husband Keith, Alicia Longo and her husband Sean and Edward Stephanick and his wife Yvonne; his step-grandchildren Coleman and Carly Villegas, Mackenzie Applegate, Ella, Scarlett and Bradley Longo, Edward and Victoria Stephanick, Geri Doyle and her husband Colin and their daughters Maeve and Hannah Doyle and godson William Doyle; his cousin Kathleen from Ireland and her family; his sister-in-law Anne Dunne and her family, and many other close friends and family.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday September 18, 2025 at 9:45am from The Gundrum Service “Home For Funerals” 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy followed by a 10:30am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Metuchen. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 3 to 7pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Atlantic Health Visiting Nurses.
